FAQs

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM A VIRTUAL MUSIC THERAPY SESSION?

We will start with an assessment to develop goals for the sessions and a recommendation for the length, frequency and focus of music therapy treatment through individual or group settings.  Depending on the session goals we may engage in live music making, songwriting, singing and song discussion or movement. We can use online programs like GarageBand and SoundTrap to create looped beats and record songs.  Goals are regularly re-evaluated and updated throughout the treatment program.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM A VIRTUAL ADAPTIVE MUSIC LESSON?

Lessons will be facilitated from a lesson book combined with improvising, composing, and ear training exercises –  the same as in-person lessons but from the comfort of your own home and without the travel time!

HOW LONG DOES EACH THERAPY SESSION OR ADAPTIVE LESSON TAKE?

Music therapy sessions are usually 40 minutes long, but can be longer or shorter depending on each individual's needs. Each session or lesson is individualized and tailored to maximize the benefits of the treatment program.

The length of adaptive lessons is dependent on the learner - we recommended 20 minutes for younger learners age 4-6, 30 minutes for children age 7+ and 30-40 minutes for older learners.

WHAT IF I DON'T KNOW HOW TO PLAY ANY INSTRUMENTS OR HAVE ANY INSTRUMENTS AT HOME?

That isn't a problem! You do not have to be a musician to benefit from music therapy.  You’re also not required to have any musical instruments or materials. It is encouraged though, and we are happy to provide recommendations for items to purchase.

For adaptive lessons you will have to own the instrument you are learning for the lessons and weekly practice.

A computer or smart device with audio/video capabilities.  The best application for online music therapy will be discussed in advance then you will be given instructions about how to connect for the session.
